For those who have dove into rooting an Android phone, you have more than likely come across the world of custom recovery images. These can be accessed by booting into a special menu, giving you the ability to many options for your Android phone, allowing you to:

  • Do a full back up of your Android system
  • Restore backups
  • Flash custom ROMs
  • Partition the SD card to allow A2SD (Apps to SD)

among other options. Whether you’re unhappy with your current recovery, want to upgrade to a newer version from your recovery developer, or just want to try something new, this How to Flash a Custom Recovery Tutorial will show you how.

How to boot in Recovery Mode

Booting into recovery will be different for each phone. If you have a non-touch buttons, you can hold the home button and the power button to get into recovery. If you do not, you can hold the volume-down-key along with the power button to get into the bootloader and then selecting RECOVERY.

How-to Navigate

Depending on your phone model, navigating could be a little different. Most all custom recoveries will say within them how to navigate, but these are some general guidelines.

  • If your phone has a scroll ball, you can navigate using that, pressing it to select and using the back key to go back.
  • If you don’t have a D-Pad or scroll ball, you can use the volume-keys to navigate through the both menu, along with the power-key to select. Pressing both volume-keys will go back.

    Hi,

I have a problem and I have checked everywhere on the internet, but can’t find a solution. Can anyone here please help me?
I have a san fransisco zte blade generation1. I wanted to update android, so I followed the instructions on http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=ZTE_Blade
I’ve put a zip file gen to gen on my sd card, put it in my phone and
then went into recovery mode. I wanted to install the zip file, but the
installation aborted and since then I can’t get out of clockwordmod
recovery mode :s I clicked factory reset, I tried to hard reset (with
volume down, power key), I took everything out… It always starts up in
    clockwork

so i followed the instructions – i placed the lastest AmonRa recovery img on the root of my sd card. but after following the instructions in this video, i get error image not found. So i reloaded the image to my sd card, turned off my phone and turned it back on and got the same error message. i then hit “ls”and got a bunch of stuff including sdcard. I figured if i typed sdcard, it would list the contents, but when i tried that i got the message sdcard: not found..

Please refer to comment #39 and also to comment #42 where willtisd…@gmail.com has instructed to ‘flash in recovery’ the file that he has linked to. Actually I don’t understand how to go ahead with this. Can you please spare time and just read through the issue (especially comment #33 onwards) and opine? Thank you in advance for the time and effort. My mail id is:
