Take Control of Android Voice Commands with Google Voice Actions

As you might have heard, Google held a press conference last week. Out of it came this little gem. Google Voice Actions, not to be confused with “Google Voice” Actions, improves tremendously on Android voice commands, which to say the least, were near non-existent. You were pretty much just limited to doing a google search or inputting text in a text box. Not anymore, with Google Voice Actions, you’ll be able to issue a plethora of commands to your Android phone. I have to say, this is WAY better than on the iPhone. Here are the different commands to use with Google Voice Actions.

Voice Action Content Example What happens?
Map of [anything] “Map of gas stations.”; “Map of Dunkin donuts.” Loads a map that includes places fitting your query.
Navigate to [anywhere] “Navigate to Los Angeles.” Launches the Navigation app to give you turn-by-turn directions.
Send text to* [recipient][message] “Send text to Joe Smith I’ll be there in ten minutes.” Launches a confirmation window where you’ll be able to edit your text message before sending with one click.
Send email to* [anywhere] “Send email to Joe Smith. Subject I’m running late Message Sorry I’m stuck in traffic” Launches a confirmation window where you’ll be able to edit your message before sending with one click.
Note to self* [message] “Note to self do laundry tonight.” Sends an email to your inbox.
Call [contact] “Call John Smith.” Calls any contact in your phone.
Call [business name] “Call Papa John’s.” Calls any business by name. If you don’t specify a location, the best match will be found using your current location.
Go to [website] “Go to Wikipedia.” Visit any website.
Listen to* [song title, genre, or artist] “Listen to The Beatles.” Launches a user-selected music streaming app.

I agree that what it does it does well, but I’ve been *very* unhappy with my Android phone (Razr)  trying boot Google Voice Commands and Vlingo.  The problem is that the list of commands is *way* too limited.  I want to set a reminder to my self.  When I want a note to myself I want a sticky note – not an email to my gmail account.  I want to set an alarm for 30 minutes.  Both Google Voice and Vlingo understand the words perfectly, but take me to a Google search.  Bah!

nice. funny that it took siri coming out for me to know android could do all this. i thought it was just for google searches.

Yeah Google Voice Search is definitely pretty powerful. Its got a long way to go to reach Siri’s level, but for a lot of every day tasks it gets the job done.
