I got stuck because the evo-root.zip link here on the website doesn’t appear to work, so I can’t download the zip file used in the video. Are there plans to make it available again?

  • Sgttut3r

I am unable to download the evo-root.zip. it’s like it’s gone from the server. any suggestions?

  • Felix_lopez2000

software and updates happen all the time it seem that there are different versions of htc evo i have 2.2 software number is 3.70.651.1I know you mite here this all the time can it be rooted, or not

  • Cortezsalas

how about if it now my htc evo gets stuck on the htc evo logo tried a factory reset and all i get is the red triangle with the exclamation mark what can i do cant get it working no more??

  • Henry Keith

yes as everyone else stats everything went well up untill the end part of vid 1 when the # should pop up mine says error: device not found what do i do to fix this? i am useing windows 7 also?

  • mmr

hey i got s to = off but cant get the clock work recovery on

  • Drewbakabob

its not recognizing adb as a cmd prompt (windows 7)

  • redhead

I type in “chmot0755 /data/local/flash_image/ and it tells me “permission denied”. Any suggestions?

  • Deluxeplus

Looks like there are too many issues with this. I’ll wait till something more descriptive and proven comes along…

  • Dresslar

    hey genius
where do i get the evo-root.zip?

  • kc

its telling me that adb is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Download the r06 version of the SDK. For some reason the latest versions don’t include adb (stupid, I know)

  • flyguy89

i cant get the # to pop at the end of part 1

  • Lucky1124

all things went well until the end of part 1 where the “#” should pop up, but instead, its error: device not found” tried many times, what should I do????

    • BuenoRoot!

Any solution to this? I’m getting the same thing.

  • quest1

okay i did what it had said but about the
“adb” part it doesnt show up in the folder what can i do to fix that?

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

You’ll need to download the r06 version of the SDK

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1404580852 ‘Sarah Ranzau

You really need to take this down as there is now better options without having to back up your
EVO because of the inevitable data wipe using your method here (it’s outdated). This is a better option: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776477&highlight=unrevoked

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

We don’t take down posts. That would defeat the purpose of bringing users to the site to find information. Rather, we note that there is an update, which is shown at the beginning of the video.

  • grant02

i download everything you got and iget to the command prompt and i get this message when i try to type in the first command ‘ adb’ is not reconized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file…what do i need to do ive spent hours trying to root my htc evo 2.2

  • Kunchen88

all things went well until the edn of part 1 where the “#” should pop up, but instead, its error: device not found” tried many times, what should I do????

  • Alucard88

Does this work with Cyanogen as well?

  • Tmallo007

      • Aaron

do you have a android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools folder? That is where my adb is. It wont say .exe at the end. If so, cd there instead of tools

  • Mikey2246

  • Mavrik342

I’m running into a problem after toggling airplane mode. It will not recognize the device thru ADB. I have to reboot the phone in order for it to recognize the device. Any ideas?

  • Jbird fizzle

do you have a android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools folder? That is where my adb is. It wont say .exe at the end. If so, cd there instead of tools

  • Leemartin

to any one have a problem with the adb push got to the android folder and go to plaform tools and copy everything but the lib folder and paste it in the tools and if it says do u want to copy certain folders agian say skip ..but that will allow u to run adb now ..

  • htcEvo2010

in cmd when i write the second prompt it says ‘adb’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file i tried it 10 times and it says the same thing, what should i do?.

  • Mark B

  • Petroman92

hey when i open the command window it says C:usersrichard> how do i get to just c:

    • ITTechProf

      cd c:

  • A-Bomb

i got stuck there too…but from my little experience from computer science class i remembered that pressing “CTRL+C” together will allow u too quit out of certain modes. so when u get here…
    chmod 0755 /data/local/flash_image
    $
press CTRL+C and it will bring u back to…
    C:androidtools>

  • Objectofmercy

    adb push unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/
    error device not found

    • Aaron

do “adb devices” and see if it is connected first.

  • wealy

I rooted my phone last night but today it is not rooted according to the Titanium Backup app. What should I do?

    • Wealy

I did have an update that my phone said I needed to do. Did that unRoot it?

    • Wealy

Now my Kernel version is 2.6.3.2.15-ge2fb08e
      htc-kernel@and18-2 #11

Which is different than when i Rooted it.

    • Wealy

I am good to go. I used your new video that is short and sweet and worked perfectly.

  • Flying_sailor

First off, I know and understand you won’t have time to speedily reply to everyone’s questions, but I am freaking the F*#K out right now. I’ve been following your original 2-part video tutorial, with only a few hiccups along the way. I am now at the 12:10min in the second video where you instruct me to highlight recovery and hit power to select it. My phone’s display looked, and still looks, exactly as yours did initially, with the htc evo 4g with white background. The problem is, in your video, you do not state how long this screen should stay that way, simply cut video and spliced in the next step after that. Sorry to be so longwinded, but as I said, I’m pretty freakin stressed right now, being that my phone has been like this at least twenty minutes now, with no change. Please please please please respond when you can. I’ve scrolled through the other posts here and found others with the exact same problem, but no reply from you. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. My email is flying_sailor@yahoo.com

    • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Have you tried the Unrevoked method that I’ve posted? It’ll reduce your stress. If you want to continue with this method, take out your battery, put it back in and repeat that step.

  • mustireally

worked pefectly from August till now that is

  • mustireally

This worked perfectly for me and then something happened back in August, something happened recently? I lost root, and now I’m in the 2.2 again without the ability to repeat the steps above without getting to the part where after hboot the PC36IMG.zip should be flashing, it says no image found PC3DIAG.zip. This sucks. I’m in need of a big brain and since I’m traveling light anyone out there sporting some green power would be much appreciated. Thanks

P.S I already switched sdcards to no avail.

  • Torremitsu

I tried this, I got to the 2nd video and im stuck in red triangle hell. Help

  • http://twitter.com/SamuelWolff Samuel Wolff

at the end, when you flash the recovery mod (i chose clockwork) how long should the HTC splashscreen stay up? mine’s been there for almost 30 minutes now, and i’m worried.

  • Tfx22

How long before we get to amon ra screen after hitting recovery. my phone is stuck on the white screen with the htc evo 4g log. did i do someting wrong

  • Ewillis101082

where do I find the files to update to 2.2 (part 2 root amon ra.zip)?

  • Keith

hey thanks a lot worked perfect! i used the amon ra and i’m wondering if i can load roms and themes the same as clockwork? everything i’ve been reading about it say you have to have clockwork i’m new to this any help would be great

  • Westraywest

when typing in command prompt and moving files to sdcard, command reads ”no adb command?then then goes back to C:/android>
    wtf?

  • Chawonkang

Can i root it with XP? Or it has to be Vista? Because im downloading this crap on my phone in the CMD and its taking up to 655,000 sec for just 591 KB/s…..

And your was like less than a second. Why would it take so long for me? Please help….

  • Shake

Hey djR3Z I have a quick question. I rooted my phone using this method, and everything went well. When I checked my phones update it says there was version 3.29.651.5 avaliable. I found they have also rooted this version and did a flash rom to this software update. I currently have have software nunber 3.29.651.5 but my baseband version is different, It states it should be 2.15.00.09.01 but mine states 2.15.00.07.28, I was wondering why is that? Also i am having a problem with my wifi. It says its connecting then disconnects, its not connecting to my home wireless connection. Can you please help me!

  • BOHICA

DJ- Thank you very much for taking the time to post this video. While I experienced a few scares along the way (because I’m new), I was finally able to finish the process. Maybe I missed it on this page, but to help future people, is it possible to list all of the software (and the links) that needs to be downloaded in order to finish this process? I found everything but I had to dig a little. Thank you again! Without people like you taking the time to share information, many of us would still be stuck hammering away at stone tablets.

Need help ASAP!!!

    • Aaron

do you have a android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools folder? That is where my adb is. If so, cd there instead of tools

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Can you go into Settings>>About Phone>>Software Information and tell me your Android version. Also, do you see superuser in your app drawer?

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

    appreciate it bro :)

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Sorry for the delays man. Unrevoked pulled the download so I can't legally release a tutorial yet. As soon as its put back up I will release a tutorial. No guarantees on when that will be though. If you're up for it I'd go ahead and do this method. You'll learn more in the process :)

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Don't accept the update. I'm not exactly sure where you got stuck but it seems like you're rooted, so boot into recovery, transfer over a Custom ROM, flash it, and you should be set.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

I like them all :P I switch on a daily basis simply because I like trying things out so much. Can't go wrong with Baked Snack. Really nice stock feel. If you want AOSP go with CM6. My fave Sense ROM is Virus ROM

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Try retransferring the PC36IMG.zip. Seems like it didn't transfer correctly.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Awesome! Be sure to check out the forums :)

  • Eaglenest608

Thanks for this! Worked perfectly for me!

  • Surfslay

thanks to everyone involded these videos made it alot easier !

  • http://twitter.com/Roly_D Roly Delgado

after i do the command reboot bootloader and i select boot loader from the menu, it runs the pc36 file but it just dumps me back into the bootlader menus it doesnt ask me to hit vilume up for yes… help what went wrong? everything else worked perfect

  • Loveis234

ok,, well after almost having a heart attack,, lol! i am final rooted on 2.2 froyo… ok no i am stoked,, to get a custom ROM! any suggestion?? thanks r3z

  • Loveis234

first let me thank you for your time in doing this,,,,, but i am freaking out here! i followed you instructions to the T,, get down to the hboot, black screen,,, and that unrevoked zip is not on the sdcard! what do i do??,,, i re-booted the phone and to my surprise i have root access,,, but no custom rom! I see that super user icon in the app's page! can i still continue and get a rooted 2.2??,,, or should i follow the prompt in my phone for the “optional” up-grade?? and if i do follow that prompt, since i already have root,, if i accept the upgrade will that be a “rooted 2.2″” i was wanting to try out that cyanogen mod6,, any comments on what is better??

  • Radar_Love

hi Djrez, hey u mentioned another tutorial coming, will it be out today or? just wondering cause i'm gonna root, just want to know if i should move forward on the existing 1, thanks much!!

  • sh0ke

thank u very much!! didn't have any problem at all, ur the man! keep it going

  • Bonnierae57

I know you get soo many questions, but could you please help me? I installed everything correctly by using your newbie friendly rooting method, and then everything started freezing…etc. Afterward I installed flipz fresh rom and it continued doing the same thing. I then tried simple root and added fresh rom again and had the same results. Sooo I Tried your method again and I was unable to get the $ sign ( I tried 4 times) Considering the fact that I did it correctly the first time I figured I screwed something up. Sooo I came across your unroot video and I tried that only to be stuck with a red triangle and question mark. It is now back on I guess the clockwork mod…I just want a fully functional phone. I promise to leave rooting and so on and so fourth to the professionals. This is my email address bonnierae57@live.com. I can also send you my number if necessary.
    Thanks

  • Alex_onderdonk

thank you so much you saved me phone

  • Radar_Love

Thanks, appreciate the quick response. will be rooting this weekend, looking forward to the new tutorial. Great job btw!!!

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

you'll still get 4g. The only data you can back up is contacts by exporting them and apps with appbrain (but it wont back up the data from them)

  • Radar_Love

If after rooting, does the evo still get a hotspot at 4g speeds? also all my personal data is wipedout when rooting, this i understand, can i save my data on a sd card then re-upload to the phone?

  • Whatdatata

I tried adding another rom after my phone kept freezing as you suggested but it keeps doing the same thing. Grrrr.

  • Droidquestions

Awesome video man. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Is there a particular reason you prefer Amon_RA's recovery over ClockworkMod?

  • Kiddpremiere

ohh Yes please make that easier tutorial ASAP :) )))

I havent got a responce to this but so posted it again, i already have the 2.2 update that downloaded from sprint i guess, can you still root the phone after the factory 2.2 update has been installed? from your video it looks like you need to start with the 2.1 first, am i missing something?

  • Kiddpremiere

    Hello,

The unrevoked3 reflash_package.exe has been taken down from unrevoked website and I am unable to locate that file. Is it OK to use the version 2 from the website? http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
I am now unsure of how to proceed. Can someone please help me?

  • Josh.0

They took down the Unrevoked3 flash recovery tool from the website http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3

What do I do now? am I stuck until this comes back up or should I just use the unrevoked2 version? anybody have the flash_package.exe? ffffuuuuuu

  • Italusa

Everything is fine with me the only thing is that when i start the phone show me the sprint animation how do i get rid of it. Thanks for your great videos.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Unrevoked 3.2 has come out, which makes the process a lot simpler. Stay tuned for a tutorial. I'm going try to have it up by tomorrow morning.

  • Bsweet

I just went to the unrevoked3 website and it states that it is currently unavailable and to use unrevoked2 with a link to it. When I click the link it brings me to a page that is kind of unclear about which unrevoked it is and weather or not it will work with this process. I am in the middle of this right now and don't know what to do next. Can you help?

  • Alexanderz2000

hi, thank for the great video but also confused, i already have the 2.2 update that downloaded from sprint i guess, can you still root the phone after the factory 2.2 update has been installed? from your video it looks like you need to start with the 2.1 first, am i missing something?

  • FuzzyBunny

Alright first off great right ups and videos on how to root the phone, my only problem so far is that I've gone to the unrevoked website but they have removed the download for the unrevoked3. I've completed all the steps leading up to this point successfully. Please let me know what I should do at this point.

  • huyh

Well after an hour of repeatedly watching the video, i was able to root to 2.2. It wasnt that bad, just takes some time. My question is do i need to delete the PC36IMG.zip file after my Evo is rooted just so that it wont scan it the next time i go to the boot menu?

    Great Work!

  • Tgodec

Thanks for the great walk through.

When i try to use the adb push unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/ command, I get an error message saying “error: device not found”

I am running windows vista, have downloaded and uninstalled the HTC sync a few times and followed the steps from your video and xda guide. I have also tried to update my drivers using the htcevohacks.com walk through. My computer was not recognizing my phone in the device manager the same way his was.

Thanks for your help and let me know if there is anymore info you need.

Great Video! Very thorough. Thanks for this. I feel confident I'll be able to do this once I pick up my phone.

  • Hambertvazquez

I am in androidtools and 'adb' is listed. But what I did notice on your video is that on your C:androidtools folder you have 'adb.exe' maybe that could be why its not recognizing the 'adb' on mine. I have tried to start all over from the very beginning and this is my 3rd time getting the same message.

    • Mogusuccess

I’m getting the same message about not recognized as an internal or external command my tools file doesnt have the adb.exe file in it and the evo-root.zip file is 15.1kb on your video it’s 16. is there another evo-root.zip file I’m not seeing? I’ve started from scratch several times. Please help

      • Shelprock

adb,exe is in the platform-tools dir if you add that dir to you path it will find it and work.
You do that by going into the control panel and then system, Advanced system settings, Environment Variables…,
In the System Variables box hit the down arrow until you come to Path,
Highlight it and the click Edit
In the Variable Value box click on it and go to the end and add
;C:androidplatform-tools to the end and click OK, OK,OK.
        It should work now.

  • Purpleguy

Could you please post a simple procedure on how to factory restore or “unroot”. You may ask why. Well if it comes to me returning the phone for a replacement or for whatever reason I don't want any hassles about voiding any warranties.

By the way great tutorial. A sort of split screen, screen recorded version would be awesome, but hey I'm happy with what you provided.

  • Scrib4lex

dj, you probably noticed im following you around asking questions on all your vids – thanks making these – really helps. So i have been trying to trouble shoot my lack of ability to flash a custom recovery, namely the AmonRA recovery. I keep getting the error flash image: not found. So, being a total noob, i have no idea whats going on, but i know that i adb pushed the flash_image to “data/local/” during the root process. i properly renamed the AmonRa recovery image as recovery.img and put it on the root of my sd card. So what can i possibly be doing wrong? does the flash_image need to be on the root of the sd card as well? thanks for the help

I would like to thank you for this video, it really helped me out. I only have one issue. My phone keeps jumping…for lack of a better term….it's like it has a mind of its own. I went to take a picture one night and it kept zooming in and out. When I try to make a phone call it freezes. should I do everything all over again?
    Thanks for reading.

  • Hcocdr

In part 2- what is ment by “Once It is fully booted, mount your sdcard onto your computer, and copy the 3 files you extracted from the zip to the sdcard.

Once copied, Unmount your sdcard from the computer.”

Is that just pluging and unpluging the phone in SD card mode or do we need another card?

  • Aspenufl

I went through the whole root process and everything seemed to work. However, now my EVO is slower and it still doesn't let me use the tether or hotspot functions. I just get a Data Call Failure, “Error Code 67 .Registration failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again.” Thanks.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Looks like you stuck an extra forward slash. Make sure you type it exactly as I did.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Did you do the airplane mode toggling? What happened?

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Try downloading the mirror. Also, is your sdcard formatted as fat32?

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Looks like the file is corrupt or it didnt transfer correctly. Try it again and also try downloading the mirror instead.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

You should be fine with it saying 0 bytes. Its not reporting correctly. Just continue.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Does the phone's screen go black? Or do you force it to reboot.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

It sounds like you either didn't install the SDK or you are in the wrong directory. Make sure you installed it to the write location and went to the write folder in the process. Follow the tutorial exactly.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

did you both create the SDK directory and “cd” to that folder?

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

You must do it less than 30 seconds after the transfer or it can cause problems. Try transferring again.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

Check out my video for how to flash a custom recovery for information on getting back Amon RA. As for unrooting, it can be done, but why would you want to? :P

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

    No problem!

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

I'm not really sure what problem you're having. Can you be more specific?

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

No problem. Glad it helped :)

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

take out the battery and try again. Are you done with the root process? Or are you still working on it. You might need to flash the recovery again.

  • http://thedroiddemos.com djR3Z

I did not incorrectly state that. At the time, it had not been tested in anything except for Windows and to wait until it was confirmed to work fine in other OS's

    • Sjimmyperuano07

Hi im a HTC Evo User i haven’t done anything to my evo yet, my android version is 2.2 baseband version is 2.15.00.09.01 and software number is 3.29.651.5 and browser version is webkit 3.1 PRI Version 1.77_003 PRL Version 60670. i was wondering if i could still root that version just like it is. or do i still have to wait.

  • james

Just wanted to say thanks, it went nice and smooth thanks to your video and to the guide posted by Dan.

  • Chchristopher

Thanks for this awesome tutorial! Just did it and now I'm trying out some ROMs.

I do have a couple questions though. At what step can I use to revert the phone back to the stock 2.2 after it's rooted (at the end of the tutorial)? This being my first time, I didn't know how to make a Nandroid of that, and I would like to have that just in case I ever need to go back.

And also, will that give me the AmonRa recovery again (lost it after using ROM Manager).

    Thanks so much!

The unrevoked app keeps getting stuck on the 'Waiting for reboot' message. This is after using the volume up key to go down to the HBoot loader. My phone then reboots to the actual opperating system and never gets to the recovery screen like in Pt. 2 (7:34)…any thoughts?

  • Fred

Thanks for the great write up and video, I have tried after all steps followed C:androidtools> adb push flash_image /data/local/ but I get (0 bytes in 655360.000s). Meaning nothing was transferred? Correct?

Next problem I am not able to get the PC36IMG file to give me the screen where I get the updates and the ok, I am STUCK , It seems to be the same problem I had when I was using unrevoked 3 , very strange before I tried this method, Their must be a way past this part. HELP any ideas

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HV5V6MQZLAQHRHEZ252XS4IUAE Coal Akida

I found 3 different PC36IMG files, I noticed you are not using the one you are telling everyone to download, So i manually transferred over the PC36 zip to the Sd card and than tried to parse that, and I got the Radio Failed and the Partition to fail which left with a phone that would not boot or recover, I never had the chance to try the third PC36IMG file out but it was the biggest file 179 mb
the other was 176 and the one you have download 36 . so I tried to buy a micro sd card reader but it would not work on the mac, I only used the mac for the reader, as i was borrowing my friends window laptop, the piece that it was.

My question is what PC36IMG FILE SHOULD I HAVE USED ?

Since i got all the way to the end of the show on your video, am I able to manually copy over the PC36IMG file and update that way.

Now I am at the sprint store , where they have a lot of people lined up for Update problems..

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HV5V6MQZLAQHRHEZ252XS4IUAE Coal Akida

WOW, they gave me a new phone, that was unexpected, and somehow the market looks different, makes me think my initial update to OTA was not perfect. ummmmmmmm Please let me know when I try to root my new phone again. please.

you need to change it to C:androidtools not C:android/tools

Don't be so hard on yourself :P

  • Hblap

He incorrectly states that you have to do this in windows. that is not true, if you are using linux you dont have to worry about any drivers or sync apps it just works… so in fact its easier to do all of this from linux than windows :)

When I try to run adb push unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/ from the command prompt it's showing 0 data moved? Any ideas or suggestions?

This guide gives instructions for this. Also, once the drivers installed, users need to know that HTC Sync needs to be uninstalled or it can interfere with the rest of the process.

    Thanks for the post Mike.

be sure your USB drivers are up to date. You can download and get directions here: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-ins

make sure your phone is on “charge only” and usb debugging is checked. start all over. but first, power down and then power up. keep in mind to delete htc sync before starting over.

IF PERMISSION IS DENIED AFTER TYPYING “./flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img” pull battery out and manually reboot the phone to boot loader. Meaning: turn off the phone, volume down and power button press at the same time to go to reboot. scroll down to boot loader after phone is done checking.
