Android Apps Series

With all of the amazing things app developers are doing these days on the different smartphone platforms, we can sometimes get caught up in the plethora of novelty apps that we forget what makes smartphones so powerful: usefulness.

TV Listings is one of the few apps that I downloaded in my first week on Android and have never gotten rid of. No more browsing through the TV Guide on the TV with a less than fun to use remote while you wonder what exactly is showing behind that semi-transparent scrolling guide. TV Listings puts it in the palm of your hands. Just put in your zip code (or let it grab your GPS location), select your cable provider, and your entire channel lineup is at your mercy. I challenge you to find a provider they do not have data for. It really is incredible.

Beyond basic channel browsing, TV Listings allows you to hide channels you don’t care about, quickly see the upcoming shows on each channel, view show details, and even filter whats showing to just “Movies” or “Sports.”

In a world where more information is always welcomed, a little simplicity goes a long way, making TV Listings one of my favorite Android apps.

Pros:

  • Filter to just movies or sports
  • Quickly see the next 3 shows oon any channel
  • Jump to current time or prime time

Cons:

  • Interface is a little lacking

Too bad you can’t just search for a show and find it.  You have to know the timeslot and be set to the right timeslot when searching.  Makes it kind of painful to use–although I suppose once you’re set up it’s fine.  However, if I have to do research to find out when a show is airing, I might as well just punch the info directly into my DVR without bothering with the app.

For that, I’d recommend an app called Episodes. I love it.

        Thanks!  I’ll check it out.
