[Update: 4/14/2011 - In the last few days, the dock4droid team has been pushing out new updates. There are now more options for the bottom bar, the launcher, the user interface has gotten smoother and some bug fixes. As such, the pictures in the original post are now a little outdated.]
Sterling Chin – If you’re looking for a great alternative to just holding down the home button to see a list of the recently used apps, Dock4Droid will quickly become your favorite launcher app. Don’t mistake this as a replacement for Launcher Pro, Go Launcher or ADW Launcher. Dock4Droid enables a pull up menu at the bottom of your screen and will do more than just the 8 most recently used apps. It’s your home button, but on steroids.
When Dock4Droid is enabled, a red glowing line appears at the bottom of your screen. All you have to do is touch the bottom of the screen (I’ve actually found that running my finger up from below the screen is the easiest) and the dock appears. Just scroll through, stop on the app you want to start, and release your finger. Presto! Your app opens!
The free demo version limits you to the stock settings, red dock bar, white background, and only recently used apps in the dock itself, but it’s a great way to get used to the dock itself.
The paid version of Dock4Droid gives you a lot more customization options, such as the color or the lower dock bar (I like yellow personally), the background color, and which apps to permanently attach or exclude, as well as many others. And at $.99, this is one app that isn’t going to break the bank.
There is one downside to the dock bar. In the beginning, it’s easy to accidentally open another app while doing something else. For instance, while typing a quick email to coworker, I hit the space bar and accidentally opened Dock4Droid and opened another application. I ended up losing the email and had to start over. But this has only happened a few times and after using the app for the last few weeks, I’ve found that I’m rarely hitting the dock bar.
Overall, I have found this dock is the most user friendly out of the many options out there! It really is your home away from home!
