How to Root the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 [Video Walkthrough] SC20110828 145938 e1314568900311

What!? Another one!? That’s right. The Droid Demos is bringing another rooting tutorial to you. And it’s not the last either. We’ll be bringing a lot more tutorials for a lot more devices in the future. Today we’re teaching you how to root the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, one of the best Android tablets. Don’t be afraid, as this root is extremely easy and you’ll be done in no time.

A big thanks to RoboBear, tphillips, Lorddeff07, and anyone else that has helped make this happen.

I try to make my guides simple and straightforward so that the average user can root their device. I show every detail and walk you through the process. This guide is a complete video walkthrough on how to root the Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi with edits based on the issues that some may run into with previous guides. Without further ado, let’s get started!

REQUIRED DOWNLOADS

Just download, do not install or run anything yet.

Instructions

This method is done on Windows. I recommend this way as its the easiest. If you don’t have Windows, borrow from a friend.

Downloading Files and Installing Drivers

  1. Download the root.zip I have linked.
  2. Extract the zip file by right clicking and selecting “Extract All,” or by using an extracting program of your choice.
  3. Open the folder and double click the driver file labeled “GT-p7510_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0-Escape.exe”
  4. Install the driver. Its pretty much just Next, Next, Install, and Exit when its done.

Connecting the Device

  1. Turn on USB Debugging by going to Settings>Applications>Development and checking USB debugging. Click Okay to confirm
  2. Power off the device by holding the power button and selecting Power off
  3. Put the device into Downloading mode
    1. Hold the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) and then hold the Power button as well.
    2. Keep holding until you see two icons. First you’ll see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo and then the icons will show up. Let go.
    3. Press the Vol Up button (the right Volume button) to select Downloading mode.
  4. Connect the device to your computer with the USB cable.

Flashing a Custom Recovery

  1. Go into the same root folder as before.
  2. Double click the root application named “Odin3_v1.85.exe”
  3. Select PDA
  4. Double click the clockworkmod recovery file labeled “recovery-cwm_4.0.0.4-sam-tab-10.1.tar.md5″ to select it.
  5. Click Start
  6. Once it is complete, you can close the program

Completing the Root

  1. Disconnect your USB cable
  2. On your device, turn off USB Debugging by going to Settings>Applications>Development and unchecking USB debugging
  3. Plug your USB cable back in
  4. On your computer, go to the same root folder as before and transfer the zip file labeled “Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip” to your device. Don’t put it inside any folder.
  5. Confirm that it was transferred by clicking inside the device folder
  6. Power off the device by holding the power button and selecting Power off
  7. Put the device into Recovery mode
    1. Hold the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) and then hold the Power button as well.
    2. Keep holding until you see two icons. First you’ll see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo and then the icons will show up. Let go.
    3. Press the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) to highlight the left icon.
    4. Press the Vol Up button (the right Volume button) to select Recovery mode.
  8. You should see that you are in ClockworkMod Recovery. If not, start over
  9. Use the volume buttons to highlight “Install zip from SD card” and hit the Power button to select it.
  10. Use the volume buttons to highlight “Choose zip from SD card” and hit the Power button to select it.
  11. Use the volume buttons to highlight “Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip” and hit the Power button to select it.
  12. Use the volume buttons to highlight “Yes – Install…” and hit the Power button to select it.
  13. When it finishes, the last line should say “Install from sdcard complete.”
  14. Use the volume buttons to highlight “*****Go Back*****” and hit the Power button to select it.
  15. Hit the Power button to select “reboot system now”
  16. Your device will reboot

You’re now rooted!

I did this on a verizon 4g model, and when it restarted after odin operation was complete, i was presented to enter a password. something i was not provided. i attempted a factory wipe that didnt work at all. i am now in the process of redownloading stock odin image and flashing back to it. thanks for nothing brent, unless of course you know the answer.

works perfect with galaxy tab 10.1 with updated android 3.2 system. thanks

  • Bob

I have been trying to do this all weekend. I can’t get into the recovery mode.
Also, to get to the two icon’s I have to hold down the up or right volume button and the power button. I’ve held the left button for five minutes and there is no sign of life.
.When I try it I get a list in the upper left side of tab, of possible things to do in Odin but I can’t point at them. They are not alive. I’m using the Verizon 4g version of tab 10.1.

Any help would be appreciated. I’m at the point that I would pay someone if I knew someong.

    Thanks

    Bob

  • erwin

it will work in samsung galaxy tab 10.1 P7500?

  • http://twitter.com/shawndconnelly Shawn Connelly

    First, awesome tutorial Brent!
    But WARNING to all those with:Model: GT-P7510aOS: 3.2Kernel: 2.6.36.3
You will get stuck at “Completing the root” step 7. At this step, your screen will flicker like an old tube monitor that is out of sync.
No one seems to have an answer as to why or how to fix this!
Unfortunately, like all things Android… more questions than answers… here and everywhere else.

    • Box024-a501

       Hi Shawn,

This is true, but despite getting this screen I was still able to root my tablet.  The beauty of this video tutorial is that once you get to this part of it, if you follow along very closely you can still figure out which menu selection you are on.  ie. Watching the tutorial, you seem him scroll up 5 items…so you scroll up 5 items.  If you really examine the screen you can barely make out which item is highlighted and determine whether you are on the right one or not.  I know there were about a half-dozen selections I had to make in this manner, and I have no idea what would have happened had I gotten one of those selections wrong…but I managed to do it and when it rebooted, voila, perfectly rooted tablet!

If you’re determined enough, you can find a way….

Marietjie – I have rooted my Galaxy Tablet 10.1 successfully, but I still can’t download apps from Amazon, I get the message not available in your country. I am in South Africa. How do I get this sorted out? i thought by rooting my tablet, it will work. I also have the market unlocker icon at the bottom, saying proxy running – is this normal? All this stuff is very new to me and I am not very technically minded! Please help, I want to fully utilize my tablet.

    • AnotherSAer

Amazon apps are not available to us in SA, Mvd346.  Use the market app instead or http://market.android.com

Only way for us to get the Amazon apps is to download the apk files where people are nice enough to share it.

  • Yurp

Very sweet guide.  Easy to use and it worked for my T-Mobile GT 10.1!!  No problems so far…granted I just completed the process.  LOL.  Thanks for the hard work!!!  I am very new to this and I feel at ease now.

Great tutorial, but I’m having the same problem. All of these tutorials on the web say that there are two icons when you do the power button and volume down button. But on my Galaxy Samsung Tablet 10.1 LTE Japan version there is only one icon. Is this something to do with my model or what am I doing wrong? Does anyone else only get one icon? So without the recovery icon, I cannot complete the above tutorial steps. PLEASE HELP I have been searching everyone for how to root my galaxy tablet. Currently its just an expensive paperweight.

Awesome instructions!  I finally decided to root my tab and this got me all set in a matter of minutes.  It feels so good to be rooted.

  • guest

for some reason I cannot get this dang thing to go into recovery! any help would be nice. I got the tablet that is on Verizons network and not sure what I’m doing wrong

    • Russexx777

That was happening to me also but i found out that i was being told differently how to push the buttons the correct way,you need to push and hold the power button 1st then when you see the samsung icon you then push the volume down button but really quickly be ready to realise both buttons when you see the next 2 icons.i was holding them both down at 1st so the tab just keep rebooting, hope that helps you out

  • Rogersac

That has to be the easiest tutorial I have ever used to root. Good job!!

  • Mcnor

hi there..nice tutorial..can you reconfirm that this is suitable for Tab 10.1 3g+wifi version ?

  • R09richi

Hi man!, awesome tutorial, the best I’ve seen yet, but I have two questions, It’s the same procedure for the Tab 10.1 with touchwiz ux on top? and the other question, Rooting my device will erase all the data on it? like to factory settings? Thanks a lot man!

    • R09richi

btw, I just updated my tab to honeycomb 3.2, Is the same process? or I have to wait to another root file? Thank you!

      • K1ttyluc1ousz2012z

no!! same process..because i used this step for my 3.2 that came with the tab when i brought it.

  • ricardo garza marcos

Hi brent, great tutorial, really fool proof! but i have a weird problem; i just got my tab a week ago but i have a rooted android phone which synced all my apps automatically including SU busybox etc. now after the tab rooting i have a duplicate SU and just a few apps get root privileges, i want to unroot, delete all this apps and re-root in orther to get them working, how do i do this.
ps, sorry for the long, long question

  • Viswanath

Is it the same for the 3G version too?

  • Chuckronnenberg

will this work for 7 inch tab with 3g?

  • Hans Henrici

Your demo was for rooting the Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi. Will it also work on the WiFi + 3G version?

  • Mikesalas28

    Hello,
I tried to root my GT 10.1 4G LTE device but when I go to the download screen on the device; it just says waiting for USB cable? I have tried installing the driver many times but doesn’t seem to work.  Please advise, thank you.

    Michael

  • Gerard Portugal

Still very, very well done Brent. But I have a questionmark with your comment :”you are now rooted” We (or I) still need some proof that that´s the case. Apart from downloading some app or some titanium app, and apart from using super user etc. etc. Where is the absolute proof that sammy is rooted .By looking at a special file, or date with a file manager ? Probably a stupid question, but still good to know once the rooting is completed.

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

You can open up Terminal Emulator and type su to check if you’re rooted.

  • jay-bizeel

    brent,
    thanks for the instructions…
i have loaded my tablet and configured it the way I like it to be…put it is not rooted…I want to use the titanium backup…but my unit is not rooted.  inshort by rooting the tablet will i loose my configurations and the unit goes back to the factory settings?

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

      Unfortunately, yes.

  • Moises

    Thank you, amazing post!!!!!

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

      Thanks a lot!

  • Darla

Well, I tried it.  Instructions and video were very clear and I followed to a ‘T’.  Now I cannot power on my Galaxy Tablet.

    Any suggestions?  Ideas?

    Thanks!

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Hold the power button for a long time. I’ve had this happen before. Possibly 20 seconds.

      • Darla

Yeah, I finally got it powered on yesterday. That was the trick. Thanks!

  • Gtkuster

Well done ! Now we need to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G into Voice Dialling.  (SMS woks OK)  Any chance ?

  • Martin

Can you please hold still the camera when you make your demo’s. I now have a headache from here to Tokyo ;-) Apart from that the demo is good.

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

What do you mean? Its on a tripod. It doesn’t move at all.

  • David

Holy cow!  That was seriously idiot-proof!  I wish all direction for rooting were that simple!  Thank you, Brent!

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

No problem, David! Glad it worked great for you

  • Norton0704

I choose “choose zip from sdcard”, and my tab 10.1 3g says E: Can’t mount /sdcard. What’s wrong?

  • Figlar2006

    Big-Big THX.

  • Dsadsakj

thanks for the tutorial. this was the best one!

  • Rick

Hey Brent…your directions were excellent and I followed them perfectly. Superuser was installed and everything happened on my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 the same way it did on yours in your video. After rebooting I clicked the Superuser tab and I received the following error message: Sorry! The application Superuser (process.com.noshufou.android.su) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. I then have the option to Force close or Report.

I’ve attempted this root 3 times in the same was after receiving this message. Same error occurs each time. Any chance you can help with any suggestions? If so, I’ll be happy to provide a donation. Thank you. I look forward to hearing back from yo

    • Erick

Rick the same thing happened to me.. Did you solved it?

      • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Could you both try updating Superuser from the Android market?

        • Jeffystahl

Hey!  That solved my problem.  THANKS

Im so afraid to try and root my 3g wifi version

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Many have stated that this works fine for 3G. Try it out and let me know how it goes!

      • Bobby

I’ve been trying and I cannot get it to boot into recovery. All I get is a blank screen or it shuts off

        • marduk98

I have the same thing happening…and we’re only a few steps from being done! Have you found out how to get past that problem and finish the root?

  • Samn265

    Thanks Brent,
Excellent work. I have the 4G version, what do I need to root it? What is the difference from the wifi procedure?
    Sam

  • Derek_bkk

excellent step by step tutorial for my samsung 7510 wifi only…can u suggest bloatware that can be removed that doesn’t impact video supported applications like skype and yahoo messenger…also i’d like to tether to my samsung captivate which i rooted, unlocked and tricked into accepting tether…i guess my question is…does the tab need to be “tether enabled” too…as its acting as a wifi receiver from my captivate.

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Stick to apps that have actually functionality (i.e. apps you can open). Removing other files that you’re not sure about could cause problems. As for tethering, you don’t have to do anything. Just turn on wifi and connect!

  • Alex_verity

    thank you so much :)

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

      You’re welcome Alex! Cheers!

Will this work on the GT-P7500 3G + wifi 16 GB model?

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

People have reported that this works fine on the 3G as well. If you do it, can you report back whether it worked?

    • Gtkuster

      works good, no problem

  • j122412!!

After update my root and over clock went away, is this normal do i have to reroot and over clock again? There are talks of honeycomb 3.2 where do i get this?

  • Ayrton Emil Sánchez Cabrera

sorry for my dumb question but i am new on this galaxy tab rooting stuff  this work for the verizon LTE version with honeycomb 3.1

    • Samn265

Did you get your answer. I am in the same situation as you are and I cant find a clear instruction. This is the closest one to my question. Let me know if you had any luck!
      Thanks.

      • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Hey Sam, see my post in reply to Ayrton above.

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

I’m looking into how this can work for the 4G version. Can you try booting into recovery and flashing this file:
      http://www.mediafire.com/?sw4km2po422sl89followed by this file:http://www.mediafire.com/?w45j8i0fcj0wck0

      • SpudboyCSP

Did you ever figure out how to root the 4G LTE version? I have one that I would like to root, don’t care about the 4G part at all, just want to use it as a rooted wi-fi version.

        • http://twitter.com/santosraymond Raymond Santos

Have you had a chance to root your 4G LTE version ? I have a similar tablet that I’d like to root as well.

  • J Docberg

after following your steps, where do we have to go to get free apps?

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

I’m sorry but I can’t provide information on that. Try a Google search.

  • Jsksj1

Dude, that was an awesome tutorial! by far one of the best i have ever seen. thank you so much!!!!!

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Thanks! I really appreciate it! Let me know if you need anything.

      • Josh

Hey Brent. Thanks for the great tutorial. I was hoping you could help me with my tablet though. Your guide is the same as most out there, but I don’t have the two icons (the download mode and recovery mode) when I hold power and volume down. I just get a screen that says you are about to go into download mode, hit volume up to continue or volume down to continue to boot your device. Do you know why I am getting this different screen? I can’t seem to find ANYONE else on the web with this problem. And I am wondering if it has to do with my model being a Japanese NTT Docomo one and it was just released a month or two ago. Maybe no foreigners have gotten around to purchasing this tablet in Japan and attempted to root it. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

  • Ryan

Is this also works for Samsung Gtab 8.9 ?

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

This is just for the 10.1. Sorry!

  • Anonymous

Fantastic demo-perf block of instruction.  You’d make a great teacher.

      Thanks man! I appreciate it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000235271269 Mark Luna

My device won’t go into downloading mode. The two icons never appear and it keeps rebooting.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000235271269 Mark Luna

nevermind I got it. Thanks. This was super easy.

  • Don

Probably the best explanation / walk through I have ever seen in my 30 years as a tech.  Thank you for making this almost painless…

Brent, you are the SH*T!!! I have been tinkering around with my Tab since I bought it about a month ago and all the tutorials out there just confused the hell out of me. Yours is quick, concise, step by step, I did it under 15 minutes. Unbelievable.  I’m gonna follow your posts because you are awesome. :)

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Thanks a lot Ellen! Let me know if you need anything or have any requests!

  • Steve

Does this work for the Verizon 4G version of the Tab?

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

I’m working on figuring that out. I’ll report back :)

  • BooRadley

Thanks for the walkthrough. I seem to have a problem after flashing the .md5 file and rebooting I do not see the recovery icon on the left but instead a use icon. Also, when flashing the icon of the android even looks different than your video. Is this because of having the IO version? Please help

  • dickton

thanks for the video, most comprehensive and helpful

This is the best guide ever, thank you so much, took me only a few minutes and now my samsung is rooted ,thank you very very much.

      • Ryan

My computer won’t let me transfer “Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip” to the driver?

  • http://twitter.com/heme Eric Hemesath

Thank you Brent! I’m about to jump in and root my Tab & Phone. What happens to my devices after I root. Meaning… Do I still receive updates from Samsung (ice creme & other)? Do I receive them and they will update just fine? Or will they not? Can I revert back? I want root, but I’m not interested any other ROMs. Any info from anyone would be much appreciated. Thank you!

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

You can still receive updates, but they will override your root. You can revert back as well if you wish.

      • Jans Mobiel

How can i revert it back

  • Landis Wilson

Hey, thanks for the post and the helpful video.  After I ran the .exe and pushed the information to the tablet, I tried to follow your 7.4 step “Press the Vol Up button (the right Volume button) to select Recovery mode.” under “Completeing the ROOT” section and my tablet didn’t load the recovery it just froze.  I’ve tried several times now but I’m guessing that something isn’t quite right.  Let me know if you say this problem with anyone else or if you have some extra advice.

  • Mike

Thanks for the walk through.  Do you know if this works with the 4g LTE version or is there something else that needs to be done?  If something else does need to be done, can you point me in the right direction? Thanks

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

From what others are telling me, this method should work fine as long as you have the correct cwm file. I’ll get that for you and we can try it out if you want to give it a shot.

      • Mike

        Thank would be great, thanks.

        • SpudBoyCSP

Hey Brent – do you have a link to that CWM file? I would lie to try to root my 4G LTE tab, but want to be sure I am not just gonna brick it…

Hey man GREAT tutorial, even I succeeded in rooting, definitely noob proof. Now, I would like to install the Starburst Rom, could you please  make a video tutorial on how to do that? Ive never installed a ROM before and I’m afraid I’ll screw up my precious tab!

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Of course! Ill be making a video for this in the next few days :-)

      • Anonymous

Great! You’re the best, can’t wait for this, heared wonderful things about this ROM but without your tutorial I don’t trust myself to try it. If you can also show how, after installing Star Burst I can overclock /flash kernel to 1.4 ghz then I have nothing left to wish for!

        • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

          You got it :-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/alangelakis Alexandros Angelakis

    Thanks’
    Brent, excellent tutorial!

    First question:
Since we can download “Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip” from our tablet and
put it into root folder, is it possible to install it through the stock
    recovery mode?

    Second question:
what are the advantages , if any, of the ClockworkMod Recovery to stock
    recovery?

  • Jason

Really fantastic tutorial!  There is nothing like video to go along with the written instructions and you covered everything to the most minute detail…thanks m8!!

BTW…what program would you recommend to both install and delete some apk’s in the system/apps folder.  I needed root I know to do this but what would be the best method/app to accomplish this in your experience?

    • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

Easily my favorite app to do this is Titanium Backup, however there are a number of apps that’ll do it for you, such as Bloat Freezer.

      • Jason

I’ve heard of Titanium Backup but haven’t played around with it yet.  Same with Bloat Freezer.  I’ll give ‘em both a look-see and get it done.  Right now I’m have trouble with a few subborn apk’s that I originally installed in fact!  In any event, thanks for the quick reply and the excellent tutorial!

        • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

No problem, Jason! Let me know if there’s anything else you need or if you have any other questions. Cheers!

No problem! Glad you got it working!

  • Chris

Does anything have to be done, such as a backup prior to rooting?

    • Rico

Would also like to know “What next?” now that i’ve decided to root my GT 10.1 using your method. Any kernels/ roms you suggest? Personally, I hate the layout of the Touchwiz UI, I prefer the Tron-like look before Samsung sent out that update. Also, there’s a lot of bloatware I want to remove. But after all that’s said and done i’m kinda clueless as to how to maximize the GT. Any suggestions? BTW- thanks for your ridiculously easy to follow guide.

      • http://thedroiddemos.com Brent Klauck (djR3Z)

        Thanks Rico!

I’ll be releasing some of this soon. Kernel, ROM suggestions, and tutorials to do all of this and more. Stay tuned!

        • wow mom cool

just did this. so easy. Now I’m curious about installing the “in paris” rom. Any help? Oy, such a noob.
